Unexpected Grief During My Breast Cancer Journey

Battling breast cancer was the most physically and emotionally difficult thing I’ve ever endured.

However, I didn’t expect to experience and struggle with GRIEF as both a cancer patient and survivor.

Recognizing grief is a natural part of this journey is crucial ... but it does not have to dominate your path. Faith Pilafas

I grieved the loss of:

my health
my happiness
my carefree mentality
my independence
my energy
my sense of taste
my hair &
my identity.

And now, more than a year after a double mastectomy and reconstruction, a part of me is still grieving the loss of my breasts.

I can reassure you though that over time, things will get better and your grief will diminish as you heal physically and emotionally. ❤️‍🩹

Moffitt Cancer Center offers some great advice:

Recognizing [that] grief is a natural part of this journey is crucial, and it’s OK to take time to come to terms with your new reality.
Surrounding yourself with a strong support system can make a significant difference in your ability to cope [with grief] and achieve positive outcomes.
Grief may cast a long shadow over the cancer journey, but it does not have to dominate your path.
