How Learning to Delegate Has Saved My Sanity

Let’s talk about the power of delegating, at work and in life.

During the last 5+ years that I’ve been in a leadership role at work, delegating has been one of the hardest parts of my job… but also one of the things that has helped me succeed the most.

I used to struggle with handing things off A LOT. When you care deeply about what you’re doing, it’s easy to think “I can probably just do it myself.” So I kept saying yes to things and watched my to-do list grow.

But we all have a limited number of hours in the day, and no one can do everything themselves.

Breast cancer made that lesson even more real for me.

How Learning to Delegate Has Saved My Sanity

When Delegation Became a Necessity

I chose to continue working throughout treatment, but quickly felt overwhelmed.

I now had “cancer patient appointments and side-effects” added to my list full-time jobs of mom, household COO, and full-time UX design manager. I realized I had no choice but to ask for help, trust others, and let go of some control along with my growing to-do list.

And you know what? Things still got done.

That experience changed how I approach delegation, both at work and in everyday life.

You don’t have to start by handing off the biggest or most important things. Pick 2-3 small tasks to get off your plate first.

You might be surprised by how quickly you begin to feel much lighter and focused when you stop trying to carry everything yourself. 😌
