Cancer Taught Me Never to Leave These Words Unsaid
When you hear the words “you have cancer,” what you really hear is: “you could die.”
It sounds dramatic, but for myself and many others that’s the first terrifying thought. It was for me, and what followed next were lots of questions.
My mind spiraled immediately…
What if I don’t get to watch my children grow up?
What if I’m not here to help my husband raise them?
And then another question surfaced in my mind:
If I weren’t here, would the people I love most know how much they mean to me?
Expressing Love & Gratitude
I thought the answer to the question above was “yes,” but from that moment on, I didn’t want there to be any doubt. I decided two things:
I was going to fight like hell to beat cancer.
I was going to say “I LOVE YOU” out loud, often, and without hesitation.
None of us knows what life has waiting around the corner. So if you appreciate someone, tell them. If you love someone, say it. Don’t leave anything assumed or unsaid.
Cancer didn’t just teach me to SAY “I love you.” It taught me how lucky I am to be here to say it.
Every ordinary day feels amplified, even now. Every hug lasts a little longer. And every “I love you” I share with others feels like a gift I get to give, and keep, at the same time.
